Ambassador Obsitnik, in Eastern Slovakia, meets Slovak people, his family and media

In his first weeks as Ambassador, Mr. Vincent Obsitnik conducted numerous interviews with media representatives from Pravda, Hospodarske Noviny, newswires CTK, TASR and SITA, and with the TV stations TA3 and TV Centrum. From December 18 to 26, Ambassador Obsitnik visits Kosice, Presov, Michalovce and his family’s home towns in Eastern Slovakia, where he will spend the Christmas holiday. During his interview with SITA, he stated that his first priority will be "to listen to common people and the government representatives in order to understand their needs and seek answers to their questions," adding that a dialogue is needed "in order to get to know how U.S. citizens and Slovaks perceive various problems". The Ambassador fielded a number of questions including those about visas for Slovaks traveling to the U.S., his own Slovak background, his plans for the holidays, and his feelings about taking the position in Slovakia.
Hospodarske Noviny wrote that the Ambassador would like to continue the work of his predecessor Rodolphe Vallee on visas, higher education, culture and the economy. He promised to do his best to assist Slovakia to be included in the U.S. visa-waiver program. "Slovakia has made great progress in meeting the criteria for inclusion in the U.S. visa-waiver program," he said. "One of the conditions for visa-free travel is to meet the 10 percent limit of rejected visa applications."
