Getty Institute Joins Forces with Art Academy, National Library to Conserve Historic Photos
Signing of Agreement between Academy of Fine Arts and
Design, Slovak National Library and Getty Conservation Institute - Ambassador's
Remarks
November 8, 2007, 11:00 am
AFAD Rectorate
I am deeply honored to represent the U.S. Government at this historic occasion.
For me and for the Embassy, this agreement represents several important
achievements for Slovakia -- and for other countries committed to preserving
historic photographics.
First, the grant from the Getty Conservation Institute recognizes the high
quality of the photographic collections and the level of professional training
at Slovak institutions.
Secondly, the conservation project links Slovakia to the best pratices and
experts in the region and in the United States -- and helps builds a future of
exchange programs for researchers, students and experts.
And last, let us remember the benefit for the people of Slovakia themselves --
and for all those interested in Slovakia's rich history. This new surge of
resources will help the photos survive and become more accessible for study and
viewing.
The Embassy is pleased to support a new exhibit of historic photos from the
Slovak National Library's archives. You can see a portion of this exhibit for
the first time today, here at the Academy. This exhibit will travel in the next
year all over Slovakia -- and, we hope, to the United States.
Congratulations to all the individuals and institutions that have brought this
agreement to life today!
Thank you.
