In an op-ed appearing in the June 9 edition of Slovak daily newspaper Hospodarske Noviny, Keith Eddins, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy to Slovakia, praised Slovakia’s positive efforts in helping Afghanistan. In the piece, Mr. Eddins recognizes that local problems in Afghanistan could seem too complicated and too far removed from a country in the heart of Europe, but official and non-governmental involvement shows the value Slovaks place on creating a democratic Afghanistan. Slovakia’s military units, writes Mr. Eddins, are committed to participate in this country within NATO missions, and Slovak Aid provides financial support to the country. Slovak NGOs work on projects in many regions of Afghanistan. Mr. Eddins states that Slovak organizations have improved the quality of life of women and children in the country and that Slovakia’s presence in Afghanistan shows that Slovakia’s influence reaches far beyond its borders. Both Afghans and Slovaks benefit from it.
