Crew and Merchant Marine Visas

The category of visa required for travel to the United States is primarily determined by the purpose of the travel.  A person traveling to join and/or work on a ship (or aircraft) operating in and out of US ports requires a “C-1/D” Crew Visa.

To qualify for a C-1/D Visa, applicants must demonstrate:

  • that they are (or will be) employed as a crewmember on board a ship or aircraft,
  • that they will perform services required for the normal operation of the particular vessel, and
  • that they have strong ties to their home sufficient to compel them to return to that home after a short trip to the U.S.  (for example: regular employment, essential family obligations, etc.)
