DCM Eddins Helps Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Czechoslovak Society for Science and Arts
September 9, 2008
Catholic University and the town of Ruzomberok are hosting scholars, scientists, artists, writers, students, lawyers and business people from many countries, including the United States, September 8-12 on the occasion of the 24th World Congress of Society for Science and Arts. The conference, which unites the international visitors with counterparts from Czech and Slovak Republic, is under the auspicies of the Presidents of the two countries. The Embassy supported students from Catholic University who helped organize the congress. Deputy Chief of the Mission Keith Eddins, representing US Embassy at the opening Ceremony, emphasized the success of bringing so many people together to experience Slovak-American cooperation in academics and research. Following the opening ceremony, Mr. Eddins and Public Affairs Officer Edward Kemp, in cooperation with the Rectorate of Catholic University, toured “Identita miesta/Identity of Place,” an exhibit documenting cooperative artistic workshops of Slovak students from Catholic University in Ruzomberok and American students from Buffalo State University and Slippery Rock University. The main focus of this Embassy-sponsored project was to recognize historical and cultural connections in both the US and Slovakia -- and the reactions to these elements through the art of students and art professors. The exhibition will continue at Catholic University Ruzomberok until September 14.
