DCM Silverman Responds to "Transatlantic Trends" with US-Slovak Common Interests
The Slovak Foreign Policy Association and German Marshall Fund on September 6 released results of the 2007 "Transatlantic Trends" - a valuable annual survey of European and American opinions on their most important foreign policy issues. At a discussion led by GMF Representative Pavol Demes and IVO's Olga Gyarfasova, along with Italian Ambassador to Slovakia Antonio Provenzano, Deputy Chief of Mission Lawrence Silverman acknowledged differences between European and American publics, for example, on the willingness to send combat troops to Afghanistan. But he highlighted broad similarities of opinion on the most important challenges our nations face: terrorism, energy security, nuclear proliferation and climate change. He went on to note the extremely successful activities of Slovak non-governmental organizations in the former Soviet Union, Balkans, Afghanistan and elsewhere in sharing Slovakia's valuable experiences in democracy-building.
