Deputy Chief of Mission Eddins Opens Pittsburgh Agreement exhibit at University Library

October 14, 2008

Director of University Library Tibor Trgiňa and Deputy Chief of Mission Keith Eddins on October 14 opened a new exhibit about the 1918 Pittsburgh Agreement at the library, along with books and other materials from the library's extensive historic collection. The new installation of this exhibit marks the upcoming 90th anniversary celebration on October 28 of the declaration of Czechoslovakia as a newly independent state. The Pittsburgh Agreement, signed on May 31, 1918 at a hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, prepared the way for the creation of that state. In October, 1918, the primary author of the agreement, Tomas G. Masaryk, declared the independence of Czechoslovakia on the steps of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA. Similar exhibits about the Pittsburgh Agreement and its significance to both Americans and Slovaks are on display at InfoUSA centers in Štátna vedecká knižnica (State Scientific Library) in Banská Bystrica and Štátna vedecká knižnica (State Scientific Library) in Košice.
