Earth Day 2009: Obama Administration Is Serious about Impact of Climate Change

Chargé d’Affaires Keith Eddins writes in the April 21 issue of Hospodárske Noviny that Earth Day 2009 comes at a time when the U.S.A. and Slovakia, as well as their partners in EU and in the world, are paying close attention to solving the impact of climate change. Mr. Eddins mentions the concern that the previous U.S. Administration’s decision not to ratify the Kyoto protocol stirred in Europe. President Obama takes a different attitude: he openly states that America is ready to lead global efforts in tackling climate change and has already announced ambitious plans. Obama will cooperate with Congress on implementing a nation-wide program of trading in emission quotas on greenhouse gases. This program would reduce current levels of greenhouse gas emission in the U.S.A. by more than 15 percent by 2020 and by over 80 percent by 2010. Unfortunately, there are still voters who are against any real efforts to solve climate changes.
