Fine Arts Students Display New Works on Freedom at Embassy

April 17, 2007

For the first time the Embassy is hosting an exhibit of young artists’ works created especially for the Embassy’s Art Space. "I Have a Dream … za plotom (beyond the fence)" is the project of an American Fulbright professor of art, Janeil Engelstad, and her class of Slovak and other European students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. Opened on April 16, the exhibit of paintings, photos, video and interactive works offers a thought-provoking commentary on themes of security, travel, boundaries and freedom. Ms Engelstad’s dedication to community art – finding a voice through art for those whose voices have not been heard – is also represented in works from her Los Angeles-based project with gangs, "Color Wars," also on display in the Embassy. This cooperative project showcases talents of a new generation of artists and provides an opportunity for Slovak-American dialogue. The exhibit is available to the public April 17 to June 15.
