Embassy and Four Partners Hold Successful Conference on Anti-Corruption
Speaking to an audience of more than 100 participants, Prime Minister Robert Fico opened an anti-corruption conference on September 21 by admitting that a culture of corruption exists in Slovakia. Mr. Fico outlined the Slovak situation, declaring that there is progress to be made in fulfilling laws against corruption in Slovakia, but said that the problem cannot be solved through enacting laws only; the permissive culture that allows corruption to thrive must be addressed. The conference, held in Palffy Palace, attracted members of the diplomatic corps, giovernment ministers and high-level law enforcement officials in Slovakia. Two panels of experts from the United States, Great Britain and Slovakia discussed the issues of government ethics and the rule of law. While the overall analysis shows that Slovakia must do much to reduce corruption, recent changes in Slovak governmental mechanisms have made progress.
