Embassy Bratislava Remembers September 11 with Face-to-Face Discussions with Slovak Students
To mark the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in a personal
manner, officers from the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava fanned out across Slovakia
to speak to students at 18 different high schools. At these town hall meetings,
each speaker described his or her experience of September 11, 2001, and how it
affected their lives. Most of the time at these informal sessions was devoted to
answering questions important to the students. One Embassy representative,
Dianne Zalewski, spoke in Žilina and Čadca on a range of topics, including September 11
conspiracy theories and the American use of military force in other countries.
When asked in Čadca whether she would send her sons to war, she
explained that both her sons were in the military, and one on his way to the
Middle East. Guided by the students’ questions, the most
discussed topics were: terrorism, education and cultural life in America. In all
the Embassy representatives spoke with 1,000 Slovak students during the day.
