Embassy Supports Greater Exposure of Communist-era Slovak Art

On September 19, Ambasador Rodolphe Vallee assisted in opening an exhibit of Slovak art from the Communist and post-Communist era at City Gallery of Bratislava. Curator of the exhibit is Arizona-based art historian Lee Karpiscak, a long-time student of Czechoslovak art and author of a book, "Dreams Intersect Reality," based on her interviews with 17 Slovak artists and launched at the exhibit opening. Vallee spoke about the greater understanding internationally for Slovak artistic experimentation and especially the effort Karpiscak has made in collecting, exhibiting and interpreting that work at the University of Arizona and elsewhere. An Embassy grant supported the book's publication. The opening was attended by newly arrived American Fulbright professors and English teachers, among the one hundred guests from the world of culture and academia.
