Economic and Political Context of Central Europe and EU Relations Edward Kemp, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the EU in Brussels, spoke to leading Slovak politicians and academics June 14 about the strong and healthy relationship between the US and the EU. In his speech at a conference on the "Economic and Political Context of Central Europe and EU Relations" at City University, Bratislava, Kemp focused on three issues: external relations, justice and home affairs, and promoting economic growth. His speech was part of a larger discussion hosted by the City University and the Conservative Institute. 2005-06-14

U.S. Professor of Media and Communications Assists Slovak Media U.S. Speaker James Hay from the University of Illinois gave a presentation and served as a member of the international jury at the International Festival of Local Broadcasters that took place June 8-11 in Kosice (East Slovakia). 2005-06-08 Golden Beggar Festival Website

Mountain and Town
American climbing legend Jeff Lowe offered the keynote speech for the sixth annual international festival of mountain and adventure films in Bratislava May 26. The Utah native joined an impressive guest list of rock climbers and mountaineers for this event. The festival is popular among young people many of whom spend time hiking in the Slovak mountains. 2005-05-26 Film Festival

Celebration of the 100th birthday of Czechoslovak - American intellectuals and comedians Jan Werich and Jiri Voskovec, depicted in the Slovak drama Piano Revue Jakub Nvota and Kamil Ziska, two young Slovak actors and comedians wrote a play called Piano Revue to commemorate two famous Czechoslovak intellectuals who emigrated to the U.S. in 1938. One of those talented artists, Jiri Voskovec, lived in the US for the rest of his life. The play is written to commemorate but not to copy the style of these famous actors. Music for this play was composed by another famous Czechoslovak, Jaroslav Jezek, and will be performed by Hot Serenaders. The play is directed by Juraj Nvota, and the U.S. Embassy made a symbolic contribution to this production. The premiere of Piano Revue will be February 19, 2005, Studio L+S Piano Revue in Studio L+S

Roadside Architecture Exhibit Opens in Southern Slovakia An embassy officer opened the State Department traveling photographic exhibit "American Roadside Architecture" by John Margolies on January 18 in Sahy, the second Slovak city where this exhibition stopped on its tour (the first showing of the exhibit took place in Kosice). The exhibition is co-sponsored in Sahy by the U.S. Embassy Bratislava, the City of Sahy and also by the Sigillum Oppidi Saag Fund. January 18- January 31, 2005, Menora Saag Centrum Artis, Nam. American children's magazine Highlights The U.S. embassy co-sponsored distribution of gift copies of the American children's magazine Highlights for use by Slovak students of English. These sample magazines were a gift from two organizations based in Pennsylvania in the U.S.A., The Brother's Brother Foundation that donated the magazines, and the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association that shipped the magazines to Slovakia. Historic Preservation of the wooden church of Saint Nicholas in Bodruzal The wooden church of Saint Nicholas in Bodruzal, Eastern Slovakia, has been reconstructed through the efforts of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad, and was blessed on September 18, 2003 by Bishop Jan Babjak of Presov. The Commission's primary mission is to help protect sites of historical and cultural importance to groups that were victims of the Holocaust, but the Commission is also involved in the preservation of other historical monuments of special significance relating to the roots of America's diverse communities. The U.S. Embassy sponsored the working visit of distinguished Roma-American Dr. Ian Hancock, Director of The Program of Romani Studies and the Romani Archives and Documentation Center at The University of Texas at Austin. For this occasion, Petrus Publishing House with the U.S. embassy's support published and launched the Slovak translation of the book, "We are the Romani People" (My romsky narod), by Professor Hancock.
