Exhibit of American Indian Photo's Debuts in Košice

Nearly 100 historic photographs by Edward S. Curtis, who documented the disappearing American Indian culture in the early 1900s, opened October 3 at the Východoslovenské Múzeum in Košice. "Sacred Legacy" tells the story of the daily life of Indian communities throughout the Western part of the United States: the sacred rituals, the work, the costume and personalities of this special people. Ambassador Rodolphe Vallee opened the exhibit, noting that the "the questions provoked by the photos in this exhibit are the same that Slovaks ask about their own cultural and ethnic groups today." Dr. Robert Pollak, director of the museum, introduced the ceremony and Dr. Milan Kováč, Head of the Department of Comparative Religions at Comenius University, gave a brief talk on some of the practices of worship of the Indians and the significance of the Curtis photo collection.  The exhibit will continue at the Vychodoslovenske museum until October 28, and open in Bratislava on November 8.
