Historic US-Slovak Photo Exhibit Opens in Piešťany on Country-Wide Tour
May 5, 2008
Consular Officer Ann Meceda opened the Embassy-sponsored historic photo exhibit, "Slovakia, Slovaks and Connections on Historic Postcards and Photographs," in Piešťany on May 5. In her remarks to the crowd of library goers and media, Ms. Meceda said, “I have personally looked forward to seeing this exhibit for a long time because it highlights the very deep and very personal relationship between the Slovaks and the Americans. To me this is very important because, my grandfather was born in Vysoká nad Kysucou and went to the United States as a young man. For his entire life, he was a very active member of the Slovak-American community in New York.” The historic photo project is the result of an international collaborative project in conserving photographs at the Slovak National Library, funded by the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles, and is traveling throughout Slovakia. One themes of the exhibit is the Slovak-US connection over the years -- introducing "pioneers" of Slovak life in the US, explaining the social and sports life of Slovaks in the USA, the contribution of Slovak-Americans to the beginning of Slovak cinematography and Slovak literature in the US.
