Douglas Anderson School of the Arts promotes excellence in the arts and academics. Established as an arts school in 1985, the school attracts students in grades nine through twelve with talents in dance, music, theatre, creative writing, film and TV production, and visual arts. Douglas Anderson has received national and international honors as an outstanding visual and performing arts high school, with a distinguished record of achievement including “Best Music Program” from the Grammy Music Foundation, placing in the top 1% nationwide in every year from 2001-2005.
Student performance opportunities included regularly scheduled Chamber Recitals and Orchestra Concerts, the annual City of Jacksonville Christmas Tree Lighting and ensemble outreach programs. Individual excellence is also encouraged with the students receiving Superior rating in solo and ensemble competition.
Decatur High School is a public high school in Decatur, Alabama, United States, enrolling 1006 students in grades 9-12. It is one of two high schools in the Decatur City School District. Decatur High offers technical, academic, and International Baccalaureate programs, as well as dual enrollment with the John C. Calhoun Community College System.
The Decatur Marching Band won the Tennessee Valley Invitational at Muscle Shoals High School in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in 2006. The Tennessee Valley Invitational is one of the largest and most prestigious marching contests in the region. This is the most important award that the band has earned since the band director, Robbie Stout, took control of the band in 2004. During past 5 years, Decatur has rebounded to joined the same group as the Austin High Symphonic A Band, the Virgil Grissom High A Band, and other bands that are considered to be among the few Alabama high school elite. Since 2007 the band is lead by Will Henderson.
