Jamie Shea – NATO’s Director of Policy Planning in the Private Office of the Secretary General responsible for advising and assisting the Secretary General -- briefed via digital video link on April 7 an audience of Slovak security experts from the Ministry of Defense, military, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and think tanks on the recently convened NATO summit in Strasbourg and Kehl. In this InfoUSA Bratislava program, Mr. Shea discussed in great detail the key issues on the table at the summit. First was Afghanistan, given extra troop commitments promised by allies. Mr. Shea claimed this as proof of a more harmonious NATO, which has successfully put recent divisions behind it. President Obama’s presence and performance at the summit, according to Mr. Shea, show that the United States is now willing to work as an equal among European allies to tackle common threats. Mr. Shea also spoke about NATO’s delicate relationship with Russia, expansion and the inviolability of Article Five as the raison d’etre for NATO’s existence.
