New Media Explorer: Best of US, Slovak Student Videos Shown for First Time in Slovakia
October 1, 2008
New Media Explorer, the Embassy's largest cultural project this fall, presents the best new videos of American and Slovak students October 1-12 in Slovakia. Six leading American art schools and three leading Slovak art schools are represented, with nearly 20 video works made in 2008 in the US and Slovakia. The video festival is a national event, with showings in Kosice, Banska Bystrica and Bratislava. The festival opens officially October 1 in Kosice, which calls this event its first offering as an EU Cultural Capital, 2013. The videos will be shown continuously at the Eastern Slovak Gallery, Hlavna ulica, Kosice, from October 1-5. Partners for the video presentations in Kosice are the Faculty of Art at Technical University Kosice and the Eastern Slovak Gallery. The short videos show the inventiveness of art students from Slovakia and the US and present varied perspectives on contemporary life and values in both countries. The Embassy will link the Slovak and US students together by digital video conference in the future, so they can talk to one another directly about their creations. The students' videos will also be shown in Banska Bystrica at Europa Shopping Center October 6-8 and in Bratislava at Shopping Palace Zlate Piesky October 9-12. During the same period, the Embassy hosts New York video artist Skip Blumberg for 10 days of programs all over Slovakia, talking with students and artists about the newest trends in US video creation.
