People in Peril Association (PIPA), a Slovak non-profit, non-governmental humanitarian and development organization, has signed a $15,000 grant with the Embassy to manage a community leadership training program for women in Georgia from April until October 2009. Based on consultations between PIPA and Women´s Fund of Georgia, the training program will focus on regional women leaders from three provinces -- Samegrelo (bordering Abkhazia), Shida Kartli (bordering South Ossetia), and Tbilisi. The goal is to strengthen women’s leadership roles in their communities and build skills in advocating social change. By involving Slovak experts, program participants will establish vital international linkages with Slovak colleagues who will continue to serve as ongoing sources of advice, provide models that can be reproduced and modified in the Georgian context, and offer mutual support and sense of belonging to a wider international community. The training programme will target 75 women. In August 2008, PIPA allocated $10,000 for humanitarian relief following the Russian-Georgian conflict.
