Pitching, Batting and Practice in Diversity: American-Style Baseball Camp in Bojnice

July 7, 2009

The Embassy has provided financial support to the Slovak non-government organization, GoodSports International Slovakia, in order to help run a summer baseball camp for a diverse group of children in Bojnice, Slovakia, from July 4-14. The camp includes over 90 children from Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, and 30 coaches from Slovakia, Canada, and the United States. In addition to being introduced to baseball, the children may engage in various sports activities including basketball, volleyball, table tennis, crafts, and music. Tom Johnson, former pitcher for the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox and current head of GoodSports International Slovakia, organized the camp, which is now in its thirteenth year. The camp began on American Independence Day with a lesson about independence, and will end on July 14 with a double elimination baseball tournament. Public Affairs staff members Annie Kennington and Dagmar Mokrá visited the camp on July 6.
