2005 Press Releases

U.S. to provide Slovakia $6 million in additional military assistance

June 30, 2005

The United States Government will give the Slovak Republic US $6 million (about SKK 190 million) from the Coalition Solidarity Fund, which was created by Congress in May to provide support and assistance to coalition partners in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The exact use of the military assistance funds will be determined in consultations between the U.S. and Slovak governments. This new amount is in addition to other security assistance funding that Slovakia already receives from the United States, which totals about US $7 million (SKK 220 million) in fiscal year 2005.

Supporting our key partners in freedom has been a major priority of the Bush Administration. Accordingly, in February 2005, the President requested US $200 million from Congress to support coalition allies that have supported military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In May, Congress provided the funds for this request, thus creating the Coalition Solidarity Fund.

The United States greatly appreciates the continued support of Slovakia and the significant contributions the Slovak government has made in Iraq, Afghanistan and other global operations. We also recognize that these contributions have at times caused hardship, both personal and financial, and we wish to express our appreciation.
