Joint Press Release
On Wednesday, September 28, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia Rodolphe M. Vallee, Ágnes Biró, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Oľga Lauková, Director of the State Scientific Library in Banská Bystrica, officialy opened the "InfoUSA" Center in Slovakia at the State Scientific Library in Banská Bystrica.
InfoUSA is the result of cooperation between the State Scientific Library and the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava. The mission of the center is to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the Slovak Republic by providing information about the U.S. and serving as a focal point for American cultural and information programs.
The U.S. Embassy provided a core collection of information materials on topics including American studies, English teaching, culture and arts, politics, law, and business, as well as technical equipment and furniture for the center, the value of which exceeds $ 35,000. The State Scientific Library is providing space as well as a dedicated librarian fluent in both English and Slovak to assist visitors in using the center's resources.
InfoUSA Banska Bystrica will offer citizens access to a wide range of information about the U.S. in the form of hardcopy reference materials, CD-ROM databases, and direct access to American resources via the Internet. The InfoUSA librarian will have the support of the Embassy staff in Bratislava with materials and with training.
This is the third such InfoUSA center in Slovakia. The first was opened in March, 2004, in the State Scientific Library in Košice, and the second was ceremonially opened by Mrs. Laura Bush, First Lady of the U.S., in February, 2005, at the University Library in Bratislava.
InfoUSA will be open to the public Monday-Friday. All people interested in learning about the U.S., whether for study, tourism, business, culture, language, or general knowledge reasons, are warmly invited to visit the center. Access to InfoUSA-Banská Bystrica is for library patrons free of charge and open to all.
