Performance by Mentally Handicapped of Kafka’s "Amerika" Opened by Chargé d’Affaires Eddins

Remarks by Chargé d’Affaires Keith Eddins

Dear guests,

It is my pleasure to be here and to say a few words. The US Embassy has supported the Theater in the Passage to show Kafka’s play Amerika on the stage. We are always pleased to encourage any initiative to bring greater tolerance to our society -- and also to integrate a minority group as actors in the major society. Not a very long time ago we were informed by Mrs. Dubacova and Theater director Mr. Matúš Petričko about the trip of this theater to the US. It is a very special opportunity from Texas theater director, Steve Bailey.

I know the people of Texas – and those who meet the group at other places in the US – will be inspired by the experience. Those who are called handicapped have an important contribution to make to their world. You have allowed these young people to do that, through performance. In this way you are providing a positive example for tolerance for the Americans you meet. The Embassy is proud to support this unique tour.

I want to thank everybody involved in this performance and now, enjoy the show!
