Retrospective in Blue – Sam Francis at Danubiana-Meulensteen Art Museum from June 20 to August 29

This retrospective of Sam Francis (1923 - 1994) is the first exhibition in Slovakia of the internationally recognized abstract artist. Francis had an extraordinary ability to express in his work a deep, almost mysterious perception of himself and reality. His work embodies the basic characteristic of post-painterly abstraction: work in thin paint devoid of expressive tactile effects and an airy all-over painting lacking a hierarchy of forms. Francis was born and spent much of his life in California but he also drew inspiration from time spent in India, Thailand, Japan, Switzerland and Paris. The U.S. Embassy in Bratislava is a co-sponsor of this exhibition, the most important retrospective in Europe of Francis’s work since 1995.
