"Roma Drom": Photographic, Children's Art Exhibit On Slovak-Roma Life

June 20, 2007

On June 20 the American Embassy opened RomaDrom, an art exhibit about Slovak-Roma life. The exhibit features the photography of two award winning American photographers, Julie Denesha, and Michael Robinson-Chavez, as well as artwork by Roma children of the First Elementary School in Jarovnice. Julia Denesha received a Fulbright grant and a Milena Jesenská Fellowship from the Institute for Human Sciences, and her work has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Time, Newsweek, The Economist and The Christian Science Monitor. Michael Robinson Chavez was recently named Photographer of the Year in the U.S. for the second time and works as a photojournalist for The Washington Post. While working with the Roma in Slovakia, he lived in their community. The First Elementary School in Jarovnice, composed entirely of Roma children from a socially disadvantaged environment, have received recognition in various competitions. The photographs and artwork will be on display from June 20-September 15. To see the exhibit, please call +421 2 5443 0861 or e-mail contact_Bratislava@state.gov for an appointment.
