The Embassy participated in a high-level conference June 2 to celebrate Slovakia’s membership in NATO and the EU. The conference titled, “5 years of Slovakia in NATO and EU – from the security receiver to security provider,” was organized by the Slovak Atlantic Commission along with Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and Representation of the European Commission to the Slovak Republic and included speeches by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Miroslav Lajčák, the Minister of Defense, H.E. Jaroslav Baška, and the Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, Dušan Čaplovič. The speakers emphasized the importance of Slovakia’s participation in these organizations: providing improved security and economic opportunity, as well as strengthening Slovakia’s position within the European community and relationship with the United States. Čaplovič affirmed in his speech that Slovakia shares important humanitarian values with the EU such as democracy and human rights. An alliance with large democratic countries can only help Slovakia’s domestic development, he said.
