Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status (I-407)
If you wish to abandon your permanent residence and relinquish your "Green Card", please download and complete the I-407 Form and send it to our contact address or bring it in person to the Embassy together with supporting documents.
Supporting Documentation:
- Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
- Re-Entry permit I-327 (only if applicable)
As a proof of your abandoned status you will receive (in person or by mail) a copy of form I-407 and a copy of your cancelled Green Card or Re-entry permit. You should keep these copies with your passport on your next travel to the United States.
Abandoning your Permanent Resident Card does not affect your ability to apply to immigrate to the United States at some future time. However, you will have to begin the process anew and apply through the usual application process.
